Kitchen Island Cabinetry: Design Ideas for Houston Homes

The kitchen island has become the heart of the home in most of the new and remodeled kitchens we build for clients across Houston, Sugar Land, and The Woodlands. Done well, it’s the piece that makes the whole kitchen feel custom.

Size it for how you actually use it

A bigger island isn’t always better. We start by asking whether the island needs to seat people, hold a prep sink, house the cooktop, or simply add storage and counter space — the answer changes the ideal dimensions and cabinet configuration.

Contrast is the easiest way to make it a focal point

Painting or staining the island a different tone than the surrounding cabinetry — a deep navy or charcoal against warm wood perimeter cabinets, for example — is one of the most requested looks in the large, open kitchens common in Houston’s newer construction.

Storage that earns its keep

  • Deep drawers for pots and pans instead of lower cabinets with shelves.
  • Trash and recycling pull-outs tucked out of sight.
  • Open shelving on the seating side for cookbooks or display pieces.
  • Outlets and charging drawers built into the design, not added after the fact.

Furniture-style legs and panels

A custom island gives us room to add details stock cabinetry can’t — turned legs, fluted end panels, a waterfall countertop edge. These are the details that make an island look built for the room instead of dropped into it.
